The Creator's Guide to Writing Scroll-Stopping Hooks

The first 3 seconds determine everything. Learn the 8 hook types that work across Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn — with 40+ examples you can swipe.

Hook writing guide for creators

Why Your Hook Is Everything

On TikTok, you have 3 seconds before someone swipes. On Instagram, you have 1–2 lines before "more". On LinkedIn, you have the first sentence before the post collapses.

The hook is the single most important part of any piece of content. A great hook with mediocre content will outperform great content with a weak hook — every time. The algorithm rewards watch time and engagement, and both start with the hook.

The 8 Hook Types (With 40+ Examples)

1. The Curiosity Gap

Create an information gap that the viewer needs to close. The brain is wired to seek completion.

Nobody talks about this, but here's what actually grows your account →
The one thing top creators do that nobody mentions.
I found out why your posts aren't getting saves. It's not what you think.

2. The Bold Claim

Make a strong, specific claim that challenges conventional wisdom. Controversy drives engagement.

Stop doing [common thing] the hard way. Here's what actually works.
Everything you know about [topic] is wrong.
I doubled my engagement by doing less, not more.

3. The POV Hook

Put the viewer in a scenario. Works especially well on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

POV: You finally figured out [topic] and everything changed.
POV: You're a [niche] creator who just discovered [tool/strategy].
POV: Your post goes viral and you don't know why.

4. The Story Hook

Open with a compelling story setup. Humans are wired for narrative — we need to know what happens next.

I tried [thing] for 30 days. Here's what happened.
Last year I was [situation]. Today [result]. Here's the exact process.
I made a mistake that cost me [consequence]. Here's what I learned.

5. The Number Hook

Specific numbers create credibility and set clear expectations. '5 tips' is more compelling than 'some tips'.

5 [topic] mistakes that are costing you [result].
3 things I wish I knew before starting [thing].
7 [niche] tools that save me 10 hours a week.

6. The Warning Hook

Urgency and loss aversion are powerful motivators. People pay more attention to what they might lose.

If you're doing [thing], stop. Here's why.
This [common practice] is actually hurting your [result].
Don't post another [content type] until you read this.

7. The Question Hook

A well-crafted question forces the brain to engage. It creates an open loop that demands closure.

What if everything you knew about [topic] was wrong?
Why do some creators grow 10x faster than others?
Have you ever wondered why [common thing] doesn't work?

8. The Relatable Hook

Speak directly to a shared experience or frustration. 'Me too' moments drive shares and tags.

Tell me you're a [niche] person without telling me you're a [niche] person.
That feeling when [relatable situation] 😅
Every [niche] creator at 2am: [relatable thing]

Platform-Specific Hook Rules

TikTok

Hook must work in the first 3 seconds of video. Use text overlay + spoken hook simultaneously. POV and warning hooks perform best.

Instagram

First 125 characters are visible before 'more'. Use curiosity gap or number hooks. The hook must make people tap 'more'.

LinkedIn

First line is everything — it shows in the feed. Bold claims and story hooks work best. Avoid clickbait; LinkedIn audiences are skeptical.
